Globalization and Mythology

Abstract

The nature of and role played by mythology in the deliberate and accidental promotion of globalization is examined using Bruce Meyer’s four types of mythology - explanatory, instructional, legal or moral, and historical (from The Golden Thread - A Reader’s Journey through the Great Books). Common characteristics of nation states and corporations in their pursuit of globalization are discussed. Historical episodes are used throughout for illustration. Looking to the future, concern is raised about the control and communication of information. In particular, attention is drawn to the danger in having the power of access to internet communication be concentrated in the hands of a few corporate or government players.
