Visualizing uncertainty - problems and solutions

Abstract

This will be a general talk intended primarily to motivate discussion. Some of the problems inherent in conveying uncertainty in statistical displays will be presented together with a variety of approaches to address them. In developing any solution, it will be essential to consider the sources of uncertainty, the nature of the statistical concept being displayed, the visualization methods available, and last but not least the audience targetted by the display. Examples will be used throughout to illustrate the both problems and solutions.
